Passage
Passage was recorded at Assembly Line Studios in Virginia, but most of the music on it was written while we were living in Seattle in a very, very tiny 2-bedroom apartment in Fremont. We went out several times a week to open-mic nights, which were plentiful in Seattle in the early 2000s. Some were hosted at quiet coffee shops, but others were in, well, bars. And we learned very quickly that to hold anyone’s attention as a harp-bass-drums band in a bar, the music had to be ear- and eye-catching. Thus, while there are definitely some mellower tunes on this album, there are also super fun (and fast) ones that came about in response to those open-mic nights.
The picture for this album was taken at the Riverdale train station in Prince George’s County, MD, which was down the street from where we were roommates together in our final years of college. I think of this album as a testimony to the travels of our early adult lives.
